National Seminar on Understanding the Tribal Life in India: Issues, Challenges and Alternate Approaches

10 th &  11 th OCTOBER 2013

Venue: School of Gandhian Thought and Development Studies, Mahatma Gandhi University, P.D Hills, Kottayam

ABOUT THE SEMINAR

India has the largest concentration of tribals in the world except in South Africa. They present a significant degree of cultural and ethnic diversity. They differ in their socio-cultural levels as well as in their behavioural patterns. Since tribal people are at different social, Political, economic and ecological levels, their problems also differ in degree. The government of India has launched several programmes for the educational and economic empowerment of the tribal communities in India. The success achieved in the past in transforming the tribal population for sustainable development is far from any satisfactory level. Even larger tribal population has been victimized due to development induced displacement, modern economic forces and other socio-cultural factors.

The tribals face the problems related to land alienation, infiltration of the non-tribals in the tribal region, threatening to the cultural identity of the tribals and voluntary migration and resettlement due to development projects. Going beyond the colonial and anti-colonial theme to explore the world of adivasis and their social history, the seminar intends to make a conscious effort to locate the present in the context of the past. It will contribute to the understanding of the encroaching colonial ideals and intentions in the name of development and civilisation that continue to impact their lives even today.
